Herbs and medicinal plants have accompanied humankind throughout history, serving as a cure for every ailment. Beginning in the Middle Ages, so-called "simples" (plant varieties with medicinal properties) began to be cultivated in various city gardens. This garden was initially called the "Garden of Simples."

“The fog has disappeared: I go out, I am cheered by the good homely smell of lavender and lavender from the Tuscan villages” (Dino Campana).

The candle with lavender essential oil and medicinal herbs has calming and relaxing properties. This plant from the labiatae family has been used for centuries for its many beneficial properties. Its pleasant effects are felt on both mind and body. In ancient times, both the Greeks and Romans were aware of lavender's countless medicinal properties; doctors of the time recommended flower infusions to soothe headaches and treat certain respiratory ailments. Pliny recommended lavender fumigations to disinfect rooms where sick people were present. Lavender essential oil is among the most widely used in aromatherapy for its calming effect on the nervous system. It is useful and effective in treating anxiety and stress, and promotes a good night's sleep. An excellent way to use lavender essential oil is to diffuse it throughout the home, especially in the bedroom. It will create a relaxing, pleasantly scented environment while also acting as a purifier. The medicinal plants used in ancient medicine were almost always wild, from fields or woodlands; plants cultivated in gardens or orchards were rarely used. In the Middle Ages, monasteries began to have their own "orto dei Semplici," where medicinal plants and herbs were grown. Over time, all herbs and plants used in the "officina," the apothecaries' pharmaceutical laboratory, came to be called "officinali." These ancient pharmacists knew the procedures for processing, preparing, and preserving plants, and used them to create medicinal remedies, cosmetics, and perfumes. In the 16th century, a new philosophical movement, "naturalism," developed. The experimental method was born, leading to rapid developments in science. In this new atmosphere, Cosimo I de' Medici commissioned an academic garden to complement the lectures of medical students. December 1, 1545, is the official founding date of the "orto dei Semplici," later renamed the "Giardino dei Semplici." The Botanical Garden of Florence is the third most important botanical garden in the world.
